Don't Ignore That Old Oil Tank!

Serious problems can arise with older oil tanks found in many homes, particularly in rural areas. Because manufacturing dates were not always stamped on tanks, it may be difficult to determine the age of the unit. Corrosion generally develops on the inside of the tank, so weakness may not be easily apparent and a rupture may be imminent.

An oil spill in the basement of a house can be nothing short of catastrophic for the owners. Even though it may be confined to the lower level, oil is an extremely difficult substance to clean up. Fumes travel throughout the house damaging property on all floors. oil that flows into floor drains can cause long-term odour and environmental problems when absorbed by the ground below. In many cases, the only solution is to remove the contaminated earth which means excavating through the basement floor.

If you are in doubt about the age or condition of your oil tank, call in a professional to check it just before the next fill-up. And if the tank is over 20 years old, consider replacing it before problems arise.
